Baptism

BIBLICAL FOUNDATIONS

What is baptism?

Because of Scripture passages such as Matthew 28:18-20, Romans 6:3-5, and Colossians 2:12, among others, we agree with The Baptist Faith and Message (2000):

Christian baptism is the immersion of a believer in water in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. It is an act of obedience symbolizing the believer’s faith in a crucified, buried, and risen Saviour, the believer’s death to sin, the burial of the old life, and the resurrection to walk in newness of life in Christ Jesus. It is a testimony to his faith in the final resurrection of the dead. Being a church ordinance, it is prerequisite to the privileges of church membership and to the Lord’s Supper.

Who should be baptized?

Since it is a visual representation of one’s salvation in Christ, we believe that baptism is for those individuals who have placed their trust in the person and work of Jesus Christ.  Therefore, those who have trusted in Jesus Christ for life and salvation but have never been baptized by immersion should follow Christ in baptism.

If I was baptized as an infant, should I be baptized now by immersion?

While various Christian denominations practice infant baptism, we believe that biblical baptism is to be done by immersion and after a person trusts in Christ. The overwhelming testimony of Scripture points to baptism by immersion after faith.  Because of this, we ask those seeking membership in our church to be baptized by immersion after trusting Christ.
